Yamaha EZ-200 with the FC3A foot pedal

When I plug in the foot pedal, it doesn't work (when depressed or not depressed) the sound does not ring like a normal piano would (again, when depressed or not depressed, the foot pedal doesn't work). However, when I unplug the foot pedal from the SUSTAIN port, the piano acts as if the foot pedal was connected and depressed, giving off the ringing of the note (as if I was holding down the foot pedal on regular polarity). How do i fix this strange problem?
