Yamaha EZ 200

I have no experience with electronic keyboards but would like to buy one for my 11 year old granddaughter for Xmas. I think the Yamaha EZ 200 sounds good but a few of the reviews I have read mention that you can only play the pre-set songs. Is this true? Is there a mode you can choose and play your own songs? Can you make up your own songs and play? Does it have capability of recording (storing) the music you compose yourself?

thank you

still get the lights?
by: Anonymous

i've read with interest about the EZ200. my question is whether or not you still get the lights on the keys if you download a midi file to the keyboard? my daughter is mildly autistic and has certain songs that she really relates to. i've found them in midi files, but want to make sure i'll be able to use them before buying this for her.
thanks!

There is NO usb input on a Yamaha EZ 200 so Dick`s solution will not work.

songs from comp to keyboard
by: Dick Rector

Hi Susan and others,

Susan you don't need midicables! It is not that complicated as you think. Using midicables you need also extra hardware and software.
NO NEED for what you want!
Just an USB-flashdrive attached to your computer to put your songs on will do and than plug it in your keyboard to be able to play them as I have mentioned after you first question some days ago.
The only thing is, the songs have to be MIDI-files. Have a look at the extensions of your files on your computer.
If it says: ????.MID or ????.KAR (karaoke) it is a midifile and you should be able to use them.
However, if the extension is ...mp3 or ...wav or anything else I doubt you can play them on the keyboard. Only the very high-end keyboards can play or record them.
I am afraid when you downloaded music from YouTube or so they are NOT midifiles. As you now understand midi is only interesting for keyboard and synthesizer users.
But there is light at the end of the tunnel!
If you go to psrtutorial.com you can download for free TONS of MIDI-files to learn from, recorded by profs and nonprof performers.
Keep it simple is my advice, (life can be complicated enough, especially when trying to understand the manual.)

Regards and success
Dick

Dear Susan & Anonymous: Thank you both! Your comments should help our anonymous Grandpa make up his mind before Christmas. Yamaha Owners' Manuals are notoriously badly edited, especially for beginners. I believe what the manual says re link up with your computer is, that in addition to the USB patch cord, you have to somehow download UX 16. Instead of guessing what Yamaha is (stupidly) trying to say, below is a procedure which should give you the answer. Access Yamaha's site on the internet, thread your way to the form below.

Dear Anonymous Grandpa: The posts following your oriinal should help you decide on the gift for your grand daughter. READ THEM CAREFULLY. I believe the unit can record music as your post asks. This is an example of networking through this Forum, and I hope it has helped you. Have a Merry Christmas.

Yamaha EZ-200

Hi Alfred,
I responded to the post you mentioned, though I am by no means an authority on this keyboard. I haven't had mine long, and I am a bit lost, even with the manual. At any rate, I hope what info I could give was of some use.
I am wanting to record from my computer - from a couple of selections I've seen on YouTube, into my keyboard in an effort to learn them. I know I need the MIDI cables, but not sure what else; and I have no clue whether files are WAV or what.
Any help on this?
Thanks

EZ-200 Yamaha keyboard
by: Anonymous

I have the Yamaha EZ-200, and I am still learning about it. I will tell you what my manual says: keyboard requires Yamaha UX16 or similar USB-MIDI interface for connection to a USB equipped computer. If you use the UX16 interface, install the driver supplied with the interface on your computer. This part I really don't understand - what driver supplied with my computer?
It does have pre-recorded songs that will help you to learn how to play them, and helps to become familiar with the keyboard overall.
You can play your own songs, and I'm guessing you could record them via the MIDI interface.
What I like about this keyboard is the sound - very strong; and alot of different instruments to choose from. I like mine alot; and I am learning every time I play it.
Hope this helps for your granddaughter's Christmas.

Dear Anonymous Grandpa: A lady from this Forum should be adding some helpful info for you, shortly. Her name is Susan and she owns an EZ 200. I hope our efforts will still be in time for you to buy the keyboard. Good luck.

Dear Anonymous Grandpa: X'mas is nigh, and if you still have not purchased a keyboard for your grand daughter, I believe the unit does what you have observed from reviews, but I have not been able to verify if it does any recording. Hopefully some Forum member who owns this unit can come up with a better response in time for the Yuletide. Good luck.
