You can learn to play the keyboard by ear or you can learn to read music. The choice is yours. Many leading keyboard players can't read a single note of music. They simply play by ear. For instance some of the most famous piano and keyboard players like Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles are blind. Many of those who play by ear are self-taught.
You can hire a private music teacher if you like. Or you can simply enroll at a music school. The importance of having a teacher and learning music fundamentals shouldn't be underestimated. It will help you better understand what is going on while you play. And when you become good enough you will be able to pick up some sheet music and play songs that you have never heard before instantly.
My personal feeling? Learn to read music but don't do it at the expense of developing your ear for music. Learning how to play the keyboard by ear can be a lot of fun. And if you're truly dedicated the same can be said of sight reading.
