How to Connect Yamaha CLP280 to iPad

I have an older CLP280 and have recently tried, unsuccessfully, to connect this to my iPad so I can use garage band etc.

I have tried both USB host to iPad via USB cable and USB to C adapter AND a MIDI connection using a midi convertor E-MU MIDI 1 x 1

Using the Yamaha Smart Piano App to enable the connection it finds a YAMAHA Piano but comes with the message "this Piano is not Supported.

I have also tried simply working with Garage band but it does not seem to connect

Can anyone please help
